One upload, two deliveries: the pixel-exact digital file and a 300 dpi print-ready sheet.
What each line means
Printed size — print at exactly 40 × 50 mm. A few millimetres off and most offices hand the form back before anything else is checked.
Digital size — the digital file must measure 472 × 591 px. Anything smaller gets refused by many online systems before a person sees it.
Head height — your head, crown to chin, should span 32-36mm. Too small reads distant; too large and the crop will not fit.
Background — a plain White background, with no shadows or gradients. A wall lit unevenly is the fastest route to a refusal.
Resolution — 300 dpi keeps a face sharp in print. Below that, features soften and agencies ask for a retake.

How to take a Hong Kong Passport Photo with your phone
Hong Kong passport photo size
The Hong Kong passport photo is 40×50 mm on white. It is taller than the 35×45 mm rectangle most of Asia and Europe uses and shorter than the Canadian 50×70 mm format. Labs that use a standard preset by reflex hand over the wrong rectangle, so the size is the first thing to state at the counter.
Head size and setup
The head runs 32-36 mm from chin to crown with a bit of headroom above the hair. Set up half a metre from a plain white wall, phone at eye level, with front daylight. The preset crops to the exact 40×50 mm rectangle and flattens the background.
Mainland document size
Mainland travel documents take a 33×48 mm photo, close to 40×50 on a ruler and entirely different at the counter. Check which document the application actually is before choosing a preset.
Output and printing
The tool crops to the exact 40×50 mm rectangle at 300 dpi, evens the white background, and checks ratio, background and head position before download. Print at a lab or at home on photo paper; the file is the compliant 300 dpi output.
Why Hong Kong Passport Photo gets rejected
Wrong dimensions
35×45 mm prints submitted for the 40×50 requirement fail on dimensions alone, and so do 50×70 mm crops from an old Canadian session. The rectangle comes first because it is the fastest thing for the officer to check.
Background faults
A plain backdrop requires even tone, and a single corner lost to shade spoils it.
Retouching and other faults
Heavy retouching, glare on glasses, and tilted heads. The photo looks fine on a phone and returns from the counter.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a Hong Kong Passport Photo?
The standard size is 40 × 50 mm (472 × 591 px at 300 DPI). The tool crops and scales your photo to exact requirements automatically.
Can I smile in the photo?
Requirements call for: a natural expression. When in doubt, keep a neutral face with both eyes open.
How recent must the photo be?
Old photos are a common rejection reason.
Is my photo private?
Yes. Uploaded photos are encrypted in transit and automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never share or resell uploads.
Can I take it with my phone?
Yes. A plain white wall, even light and an eye-level phone cover the 40×50 mm frame; the tool does the exact crop.
Is 40×50 mm the same as the China mainland permit format?
No. Mainland travel permits use 33×48 mm; the Hong Kong passport uses 40×50 mm. Each has its own preset.
