One upload, two deliveries: the pixel-exact digital file and a 300 dpi print-ready sheet.

What each line means

Printed size — print at exactly 33 × 48 mm. A few millimetres off and most offices hand the form back before anything else is checked.

Digital size — the digital file must measure 390 × 567 px. Anything smaller gets refused by many online systems before a person sees it.

Head height — your head, crown to chin, should span 28-33mm (chin to top of head). Too small reads distant; too large and the crop will not fit.

Background — a plain White background, with no shadows or gradients. A wall lit unevenly is the fastest route to a refusal.

Resolution — 300 dpi keeps a face sharp in print. Below that, features soften and agencies ask for a retake.

Recency — Within 6 months. Hair, glasses and weight change faster than people assume, and the officer compares the photo with you at the counter.

Glasses / expression — glare on lenses hides the eyes, and hidden eyes are an automatic rejection in most systems. If you wear glasses, read this line twice.

Digital format — some portals accept a single file type and quietly refuse everything else. Check what you are handing over before you upload.

How to take a Chinese Passport Photo with your phone

Two head measurements

The Chinese passport photo is 33×48 mm on white. The head is measured on two axes: 28-33 mm from chin to crown and 15-22 mm wide between the ears. Most formats check height alone; this one also has a width band, so a face that passes the height check can still miss on width.

Head position and top margin

With the head running 28-33 mm and the top edge 3-5 mm above the hair, the frame has little vertical slack. Below the chin, the frame keeps at least 7 mm of visible neck and collar. Frame with the full head in view. Zooming in to fill the frame pushes the top margin under the 3 mm minimum.

Online file and print resolution

The digital submission takes a JPEG at 390×567 px, and the print for the counter runs at 300 dpi. Both come from the same shot. The preset exports the print and the compliant file side by side.

Lighting, expression, and editing rules

Face a window for even light on a white wall without shadows. Neutral expression, mouth closed, both eyes open. Glasses are better removed because reflections are a recognised fault, and edited or composited photos are refused outright: the frame has to be the original capture, taken within 6 months.

Why Chinese Passport Photo gets rejected

Head measurements

Rejections often involve the two bands: under 28 mm or over 33 mm chin-to-crown, a width outside 15-22 mm, or hair that touches the top edge instead of stopping 3-5 mm short. Studio prints often sit at the edge of one of them.

Edited photos and photo age

Edited or composited photos are refused by rule, and anything older than 6 months is refused by age. Shadows or gradients on the wall fail the background check in the same pass.

Glare and other defects

Reflections on glasses, red-eye, and a tilted head are not measured in millimetres. They are still grounds for a return. The check on this page covers the bands and the background before download.

Photo tips

Face a windowEven, front lighting removes face shadows — the #1 rejection reason.
Plain backgroundAny light plain wall works; the tool replaces it with the compliant color.
Look straightHead level, eyes into the lens, shoulders square to the camera.
Neutral faceMouth closed, both eyes open unless your document allows a smile.
Mind the glasses ruleSome documents do not allow glasses — check the requirements table.
Everyday clothesDark top over white is easiest; avoid uniforms and hats.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Chinese Passport Photo?

The standard size is 33 × 48 mm (390 × 567 px at 300 DPI). The tool crops and scales your photo to exact requirements automatically.

Can I smile in the photo?

Requirements call for: Natural expression, mouth closed, eyes open. When in doubt, keep a neutral face with both eyes open.

How recent must the photo be?

Within 6 months Old photos are a common rejection reason.

Is my photo private?

Yes. Uploaded photos are encrypted in transit and automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never share or resell uploads.

What file does the application need?

A JPEG at 390×567 px for the online system. The tool exports that file alongside the 300 dpi print size.

Can I wear glasses?

Better not. Reflections are a listed fault, and the safest route is to remove them for the shot.
