One upload, two deliveries: the pixel-exact digital file and a 300 dpi print-ready sheet.
What each line means
Printed size — print at exactly 35 × 45 mm. A few millimetres off and most offices hand the form back before anything else is checked.
Digital size — the digital file must measure 413 × 531 px. Anything smaller gets refused by many online systems before a person sees it.
Head height — your head, crown to chin, should span 32-36mm. Too small reads distant; too large and the crop will not fit.
Background — a plain White background, with no shadows or gradients. A wall lit unevenly is the fastest route to a refusal.
Resolution — 300 dpi keeps a face sharp in print. Below that, features soften and agencies ask for a retake.

How to take a Japan Passport Photo with your phone
Photo size and head measurements
The Japanese passport photo is 35×45 mm on white. The MOFA specification carries two measurements: the head runs 32-36 mm from chin to crown, and the top edge sits 2-6 mm above the hair. Both measurements are checked. A frame that fits the head but crowds the top edge is rejected.
Top margin above the hair
The 2-6 mm margin above the hair is the measurement home photos miss most. Zooming in to fill the frame crowds it; standing too far opens it. Keep clear wall visible above the head and let the crop place the gap inside the band.
Visa format change
The 45×45 mm square was the earlier visa format. The 2025 standard aligned the visa with the passport rectangle, so both documents now read 35×45 mm. Older guides still describe the square, and a square crop cannot be stretched into the rectangle without distorting the face.
Setup and output
Plain white wall, half a metre back, phone at eye level, front daylight. Neutral expression, mouth closed, no headwear, glasses off where you can manage it. The preset crops to the exact 35×45 mm rectangle at 300 dpi, flattens the background, and checks ratio, background and head position before download.
Why Japan Passport Photo gets rejected
Measured faults
Outside 35×45 mm, a head outside 32-36 mm, or a top margin outside 2-6 mm: these are the three measured faults. They are checked with a template before anything else.
Background and quality
Patterned or shadowed backgrounds, gradients, and blur are faults. An evenly lit wall photographs as plain. A corner that falls into shadow can take on the look of a pattern.
Face and file faults
A face tilted or turned, glare on glasses, or files that went through a smoothing app are faults. The photo may look fine on a phone but fail at the counter.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a Japan Passport Photo?
The standard size is 35 × 45 mm (413 × 531 px at 300 DPI). The tool crops and scales your photo to exact requirements automatically.
Can I smile in the photo?
Requirements call for: a natural expression. When in doubt, keep a neutral face with both eyes open.
How recent must the photo be?
Old photos are a common rejection reason.
Is my photo private?
Yes. Uploaded photos are encrypted in transit and automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never share or resell uploads.
Is the passport photo the same size as the Japan visa photo?
Yes — they match now. The 2025 standard aligned the visa with the passport: both use the 35×45 mm rectangle, and the old 45×45 mm square no longer applies. Each still has its own preset for the application you are making.
Can I take it with my phone?
Yes. A plain white wall, even light and an eye-level phone are enough; the tool handles the exact crop and background.
