About photo requirements in Germany

German passport photos follow the biometric 35×45mm standard: the head fills most of the frame, eyes level and centred, on a plain light background with no shadows.

The German document page below shows the size, head height and background rules with the official source cited. The studio delivers a file cut to that standard.

How to take Germany document photos with your phone

The German standard format

German document photos are 35×45 mm on a plain light background, with the head 32-36 mm from the chin to the hair root. Passport and visa photos share the format, which is also the Schengen standard.

Shooting it yourself

Half a metre from a plain wall, camera at eye level, daylight from the front. Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open; a smile is treated as a non-neutral expression at German offices.

Photo editing

Filters and smoothing are named grounds for rejection on German official pages. Passport and visa applications get the same scrutiny, so the file should be an unedited original.

Why Germany document photos get rejected

Measured faults

The wrong rectangle, a head outside 32-36 mm, and a tilted or turned face account for most returns. German offices measure chin to hair root; they do not use crown to chin. Check the line before uploading.

Background faults

Shadows on the wall, grey gradients and patterned surfaces make the background non-plain. Light the wall evenly and let the tool flatten the tone.

Quality faults

Blur, glare on glasses and red-eye often appear together on home shots. Each is avoidable with frontal daylight and a steady phone at eye level.

Photo tips

Take one good selfie — it works for every document type.

Face a windowEven, front lighting removes face shadows — the #1 rejection reason.
Plain backgroundAny light plain wall works; the tool replaces it with the compliant color.
Look straightHead level, eyes into the lens, shoulders square to the camera.
Neutral faceMouth closed, both eyes open unless your document allows a smile.
Mind the glasses ruleSome documents do not allow glasses — check the requirements table.
Everyday clothesDark top over white is easiest; avoid uniforms and hats.
