About photo requirements in New Zealand
New Zealand splits photo rules by channel. The paper route uses the 35×45mm print. The online application uploads a portrait JPEG between 900×1200 and 2250×3000 pixels, with the file between 500KB and 3MB, and INZ checks both during upload.
Both New Zealand pages appear below with their sizes and file limits. The studio delivers a file inside the official window.
How to take New Zealand document photos with your phone
Face size as a percentage
New Zealand's visa sheet omits the millimetre head band: INZ asks that the face cover 70-80% of the image, a proportional rule that survives cropping. The paper print still measures 35×45 mm, but the number applied to it is a percentage.
Paper print and digital pixel ranges
The paper route ends in a 35×45 mm print. The digital routes use pixels: the online visa portal takes a portrait between 900×1200 and 2250×3000 px, and the passport renewal upload accepts 900×1200 up to 4500×6000 px, delivered here at 1650×2200. All of these sizes have the 3:4 shape.
File size limits
Each portal sets a file size range: 500 KB to 3 MB on the online visa route, 250 KB to 5 MB on the passport upload. The visa channel names edited or smoothed files as unacceptable, so the file exported from this site is the one that arrives.
Why New Zealand document photos get rejected
Crops that break the 3:4 ratio
A crop that drifts off 3:4, a face outside the 70-80% band, or a portrait squeezed toward landscape will be caught by the portal's upload check on the digital routes.
Background and light
DIA describes the digital passport background as plain and light-coloured. The same approach applies to the visa sheet: an even wall, frontal window light, and no shadow pooled behind the head.
File size and photo age faults
The faults are a file over 3 MB or under 500 KB, over 5 MB or under 250 KB, a file run through a filter app, or a photo older than six months on the passport upload. These rejections appear as portal error messages rather than letters.
