One upload, two deliveries: the pixel-exact digital file and a 300 dpi print-ready sheet.
What each line means
Printed size — print at exactly 40 × 50 mm. A few millimetres off and most offices hand the form back before anything else is checked.
Digital size — the digital file must measure 472 × 591 px. Anything smaller gets refused by many online systems before a person sees it.
Background — a plain White background, with no shadows or gradients. A wall lit unevenly is the fastest route to a refusal.
Resolution — 300 dpi keeps a face sharp in print. Below that, features soften and agencies ask for a retake.

How to take a 40x50mm Photo with your phone
Hong Kong passport and visa photo size
The Hong Kong passport and visa both use a 40×50 mm rectangle on this site. It is taller and wider than the 35×45 mainstream format, so the head has a larger canvas and the printer a larger proof.
Head position and margin
The extra five millimetres of width and height change where the head sits and how much margin the frame carries. A 35×45 crop stretched to fit will pass no ruler. Export for the rectangle itself. Do not use the nearest neighbour format.
Setup and lighting
A plain white wall, frontal light, camera at eye level. Start here for the rectangle; the Hong Kong passport and visa pages carry their own head-band and background rules on top of it.
What this page outputs
The preset crops to the exact 40×50 mm rectangle on white at print resolution, with head position, background and ratio checked before export.
Why 40x50mm Photo gets rejected
Stretched neighbour format
A 35×45 file pulled to 40×50 distorts the face: the width and height stretch by different factors, and the eyes end up wider apart than the face they came from. Crop from the original file and do not crop from another format.
Near-miss studio cut
Studios cutting slightly inside the paper edge deliver 38×48 or 39×49 files; the form reads them as undersized. The rectangle is nominal. It is not approximate.
Ordinary faults
Shadows, tilts, off-white walls — the standard refusals, on a frame large enough to show each one clearly.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a 40x50mm Photo?
The standard size is 40 × 50 mm (472 × 591 px at 300 DPI). The tool crops and scales your photo to exact requirements automatically.
Can I smile in the photo?
Requirements call for: a natural expression. When in doubt, keep a neutral face with both eyes open.
How recent must the photo be?
Old photos are a common rejection reason.
Is my photo private?
Yes. Uploaded photos are encrypted in transit and automatically deleted within 24 hours. We never share or resell uploads.
Can I take it with my phone?
Yes. A plain white wall, even light and an eye-level phone cover the 40×50 mm frame; the tool does the exact crop.
Is this the same as the Hong Kong passport photo?
The rectangle matches Hong Kong's 40×50 mm registration; this page is the generic preset for the format.
