One upload, two deliveries: the pixel-exact digital file and a 300 dpi print-ready sheet.
What each line means
Printed size — print at exactly 35 × 45 mm. A few millimetres off and most offices hand the form back before anything else is checked.
Digital size — the digital file must measure 413 × 531 px. Anything smaller gets refused by many online systems before a person sees it.
Head height — your head, crown to chin, should span 70-80% of photo height (face, chin to forehead). Too small reads distant; too large and the crop will not fit.
Background — a plain White background, with no shadows or gradients. A wall lit unevenly is the fastest route to a refusal.
Resolution — 300 dpi keeps a face sharp in print. Below that, features soften and agencies ask for a retake.
Recency — Within 6 months. Hair, glasses and weight change faster than people assume, and the officer compares the photo with you at the counter.
Glasses / expression — glare on lenses hides the eyes, and hidden eyes are an automatic rejection in most systems. If you wear glasses, read this line twice.
Digital format — some portals accept a single file type and quietly refuse everything else. Check what you are handing over before you upload.

How to take a Italy Passport Photo with your phone
Photo size and head height
The Italian passport photo is 35×45 mm on a white background. The official proportion runs from the chin to the forehead, and the face fills 70-80% of the frame height. Most countries measure to the crown, including hair. Italy stops at the forehead line, so the band can fall in a different place for anyone with volume above the forehead line.
Glasses rules
Italy is one of the countries that still permits glasses. The eyes must remain fully visible, with no glare and no tinted lenses. Frames that block the eyes disqualify the photo. If your frames are heavy, the safe option is to take the photo without them.
Setup and lighting
Stand half a metre from a plain wall, hold the phone at eye level and look straight into it. The crop handles the rest. Use a neutral expression and no headwear. The photo must be taken within the last six months, because Comune offices check the date as part of the return.
Tool output
The tool crops to the exact 35×45 mm rectangle, sets the background to plain white, and checks ratio, background and head position before download.
Why Italy Passport Photo gets rejected
Face proportion
Comune offices return photos whose face proportion misses the 70-80% band. This is measured the Italian way, to the forehead. This applies regardless of how the photo would score under another country's crown-to-chin rule.
Age and glasses faults
Photos taken more than six months earlier fail the freshness check. Glasses with glare, tint or frames blocking the eyes fail the visibility check.
Ordinary faults
Shadows, gradients and busy backgrounds apply as usual. The page checks ratio and background before download.
